John Andrew Long

Graveside services for John Andrew Long, Jr., 76, of Lindale are scheduled for 2:00 P.M. Friday at Rusk County Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Henderson with the Rev. Ron Byrd officiating, under the direction of Caudle-Rutledge Funeral Home in Lindale. Mr. Long died September 13, 2005 in Tyler after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born February 22, 1929 in Crockett, Texas to the late John A. and Thelma Barnes Long. He attended Texas A & M University on a football scholarship. He was a graduate of Stephen F. Austin University where he was a football letterman. SFA is also where he met the love of his life, Iwana. He served in the U. S. Army. After many years of working with Humble and Texaco Oil Companies, he retired from the Texas Department of Health Meat Safety Assurance as a supervisor. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, member of University Christian Church in Tyler, and a former member of First Christian Church Mineola where he served many years as Elder and Board Chairman. He was also an integral part of the Lindale Community in years past having served numerous years as an Alderman on the city council. At the time of his birth, Mr. Long's father was serving as a State Representative. Because of his birth date, a proclamation was declared from the House floor naming him John Andrew George Washington Long, Jr. He was truly a man with a heart of gold who never met a stranger. He was always ready to help anybody at any time. He was a devoted husband and father to "his girls". He will be sorely missed by all who had the good fortune to know him. Survivors include his loving Wife of 53 years, Iwana Burk Long of Lindale; Daughters & Son-in-law, Melinda Long White of Killeen and Molly & Jerry Bacon of Lindale; Grandsons, John Christopher White of College Station, Dylan Bacon of Lindale and Michael Bacon of Palestine; Granddaughters, Kerri and Kathryn White of Killeen, Whitney Bacon of Lindale, Amy Bacon of Neches, and Launa Bacon of Palestine; Great Granddaughter, MacKenzie Callaway of Neches; Brother & Sister-in-law, Dr. Houston and Julia Long of Grand Saline; Sister, Ann Cother of North Little Rock, Arkansas; and numerous Nieces and Nephews. Pallbearers will be John Christopher White, Jerry Bacon, Dylan Bacon, Michael Bacon, Jimmy Brown, Larry Hatch, and Ben Strange. The family wishes to thank Dr. Myrtha Basile, Meredith Wauqua and Staff at ETMC Cancer Center, Dr. David Johnson and the nursing staff of the 4th Floor Intensive Care Unit for your loving care and compassion during this most difficult time. The long battle is over now, Daddy. May you rest peacefully in the arms of the Lord. We love you.
