Funeral services for Mary Helen Martin, age 92, of Tyler, Texas are scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Saturday, February 17, 2018 (Visitation is at 2pm) at the Caudle-Rutledge-Daugherty Funeral Home Chapel in Lindale, Texas. Brother John Brindley will be officiating. Interment will follow at Lindale City Cemetery for our beloved mother, grandmother, aunt & sister. Helen passed away to Heaven on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at her residence in Tyler,Tx. She was born in Iowa Park, Texas on January 12, 1926 to the late Roy Bates and Susie (Werther) Carlton. The family resided in Iowa Park, Tx for 16 years and then moved to Amarillo Tx where Helen graduated from high school at which time the family moved to Ft Worth, Tx. At the young age of 17 she was youth director in her church and sang in city & church choirs. She worked in sales at Montgomery Wards & as a private secretary for a local business. She married Oliver Edgar Martin in 1949 (both from Ft Worth) and moved to Tyler Tx, “We were married for 43 wonderful years and he was the love of my life” (Her Words) The family businesses were Martin Engineering & Tyler Weathermakers Inc still in operation. They lived and raised a family of two boys on San Antonio St, Tyler Tx 1950 to 1969 Retired to a Cattle & Horse Ranch near Ann Campbell Rd (Tyler) 1969 to 1985 Spring Club Lake (Tyler) became a part time and permanent home 1954 to present Resident of Rosewood Estates (Tyler) from 2006 to 2012 Resident of Atria Copeland (Tyler) 2012 to 2016 and Rosewood Estates from 2016 to 2018. Helen & Oliver attended many churches and were co-founders of three Tyler Churches. Singing in many city and church choirs and volunteer work were her passions. She was a classroom monitor at Tyler Christian School for 6 years She was a Leader in Women's Aglo for 12 years She was a Christian Mentor at Gatesville Women's Prison once a month for 7 years. Her favorite bible verse: 1 Cor 13: “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love”. Helen is preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Oliver Edgar Martin in 1991; son, Jesse Roy Martin; sister, Mabel Sherman; brother, Leroy Carlton, niece Jacquetta Carlton Bucher; sister in laws, Joan Carlton, Mary Jo Carlton O'neal, and brother in law, Jesse K Mattox Jr. She is survived by her son, Lawrence (Larry) Oliver Martin and wife, Catherine of Tyler, Tx; brother, Donald Carlton of Kansas City, Missouri; sister-in-law, Sunshine Mattox of Lubbock,Tx. loving grandchildren, Amy Zapf of Boerne, Tx and Andrea Steele of Tyler, Tx; loving great grandchildren, Ashley Zapf, Walker Steele, Jackson Steele, Reagan Steele, and Laken Steele. Also survived by very dear niece, Jolynn Carlton Kinman of Deming, New Mexico and very dear nephew Brendan Carlton of Kansas City, Missouri; dear nieces Janelle Carlton Kiker, Rachael Carlton, Kindra Joni Wilbanks, and Julie Mattox Douglass; dear nephews, Joel Carlton, Jesse Mattox III & John Mattox.
